A day along the Ebro: Miravet, Tortosa and the delta
Our weekend road trip: a town on a cliff, a drive along the river, Tortosa's fortress, a Greek lunch in Amposta and flamingos in the Ebro Delta.

At the weekend we did a day trip by car to several places in Catalonia along the Ebro. Here’s the whole day in order, briefly; each place has its own post with more detail.
1. Miravet. A small, picturesque town on the Ebro: the houses sit right on a cliff above the river, there’s a Templar castle at the top and a traditional ferry crossing the river below. There isn’t much to do and coffee is hard to find, but it’s absolutely worth seeing. → Miravet
2. The road along the Ebro. From Miravet to Tortosa the road follows the river: mountains, the river, a dam and lots of viewpoints. We didn’t have time to stop at any of them, but you should.
3. Tortosa. The town left me with a heavy feeling, but the Castell de la Suda fortress is worth it: you can drive right inside, and there’s a parador there too. My main tip: don’t leave your car in the underground car park in the centre, drive straight up. → Tortosa
4. Lunch in Amposta. 20 minutes from Tortosa, where the delta begins, there’s a small Greek restaurant, Mariscos de Grecia, with a 4.9 rating and low prices. It was really good. → Mariscos de Grecia
5. The Ebro Delta. The last stop: we got to the delta at almost five in the evening, tired, just to see the flamingos. They were there, though the flock was small. → Ebro Delta: a quick stop for flamingos
💡 If you do the same route: set off early, have your coffee on the way, drive straight to the fortress in Tortosa, and if you can, give the delta a day of its own. And don’t forget binoculars or a monocular for the flamingos.
