If you have a free day, it’s well worth heading to the Ebro delta, about an hour’s drive from Tarragona. The Ebro is Spain’s longest river, and its delta is one of the largest nature parks in Catalonia. This is where the river flows into the Mediterranean, forming huge lagoons, rice fields and sandbars.

The delta’s real treasures are its nature and its food. This is where the famous Arroz del Delta del Ebre rice is grown, oysters and mussels are farmed, and dishes are made with local eel. Be sure to try rice with seafood or rice with blue crab (arroz con cangrejo azul) โ€” one of the region’s signature dishes.

๐Ÿฆฉ You can see flamingos here almost all year round, but the largest colonies and the best chances of spotting them are from March to July, during the nesting season. Autumn and winter are also great for birdwatching, when many migratory species arrive in the delta.
