Things to do in Tarragona
What to do in Tarragona and which festivals are worth catching: Santa Tecla, Carnival and Tarraco Viva.
Tarragona is a city perfectly suited to a relaxed getaway. It’s a pleasure to walk around the old town, admire the Roman monuments and the sea views, relax on the sandy beaches, try Mediterranean food in local restaurants, and go shopping on the central streets and in the shopping centres.
If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of the city’s festivals, the experience will be even richer. Before your trip, it’s worth checking the city’s events calendar — plenty of festivals and cultural events take place here throughout the year.
The most interesting festivals
- Santa Tecla (second half of September) — Tarragona’s main festival, more than 700 years old. Over two weeks there are processions of giants, human towers (castells), concerts, fireworks and the famous correfoc fire runs. It’s the biggest event of the year in the city. (tarragona.cat)
- Carnaval (February–March, dates depend on Easter) — a colourful carnival with costumed parades, music and a festive atmosphere. One of the most fun celebrations in Catalonia.
- Tarraco Viva (May) — a unique international festival of Roman history. The city hosts re-enactments of gladiator fights and Roman legions, lectures, workshops and theatrical performances that vividly bring ancient Tarraco back to life. (tarracoviva.com)
